Quit School to Volunteer for the Army to go to Vietnam!

A typical high school student, hearing about the war and wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, Wayne quit High School to join the U.S. Army. His father Earl, a World War II veteran, often told stories about the war, making Wayne want to join. So his father signed so the this underaged teenager could join.

After basic training Wayne was sent to Okinawa, where he got a “Soldier of the Month “ Award and got the High School Diploma he had missed when he joined the army.

During the Vietnam War, Wayne was with a unit which provided support for paratroopers who went into Nam itself. One time, when they were delivering supplies to the troops, some Viet Cong were shooting at them from the shore, and they had to duck and run to keep from being shot.

A childhood friend. was killed, and even though Wayne came out unharmed in body, the reception that the vets got when they came back left many disillusioned and wounded in their minds. This led to too much drinking and the joining of the motorcycle club called the Pagans. ...a mostly harmless group with lots of disillusioned vets who drank too much.
